A short poem inspired by The Battle of Cable Hogue

If I go back into that town I’ll be no one again
But out here by this cattle-pass, lying in the grass, I’m a man.
If I go back into that town I’ll be dead, my friend.
If the sheriff doesn’t get me I’ll die old and alone in the end.

The stars are light years away,
All we have here is the soot-smearing tears of dismay.
But there’s no mining, there’s no cattle-drive, and there’s no hay,
Just a lingering feeling these ill-gotten gains wont remain.
